The Dean campaign also tried to appeal to the numerous veterans in Arizona, which will hold its primary on Tuesday, by having retired Marine Corps General Joseph P. Hoar, who once headed US forces in the Persian Gulf region, vouch for Dean's leadership skills and question those of Kerry. The senator often touts his record as a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War; he has said that Dean lacks the experience to be commander-in-chief.
Hoar recalled testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on which Kerry sits, for a day and a half in August 2002, as the body weighed the impending prospect of war with Iraq.
"In that day and a half, Senator Kerry appeared for 20 minutes, asked two questions, and left. " by the administration, Hoar said. "There were plenty of us that spoke against preemption and the war in Iraq and the consequences of it. The insiders in the Senate went along with the president, because they were afraid to do otherwise."
